Cardiff University is seeking a highly professional, efficient, high quality hazardous waste (Chemical and Clinical) disposal contractor(s), dedicated to providing an expert technical service which is conducted in an environmentally sustainable manner, which complies with all current and future legislation and aims to achieve the best ‘overall environmental outcome’. The contractor(s) will be a leader in hazardous waste management and be committed to excellence in professional delivery through membership of CIWM and accredited to a scheme such as Safe Contractor (or equivalent). The contract is for the provision of a Clinical waste and Chemical waste (including laboratory glass waste) disposal service for the University.
The University recognises the need to manage its hazardous waste disposal utilising the ‘best available techniques not entailing excessive cost’.
This contract will be for Clinical and Chemical (including Laboratory glass) waste collection and disposal for Cardiff University across our all our sites.
The contract will encompass the (segregation as appropriate), investigation as to possible re-use/recycling or recovery before the option of treatment and final disposal of Chemical and Clinical Waste.
The University is committed to Government objectives of achieving sustainable waste management and will adopt principles of Welsh Government’s ‘Towards Zero Waste’ the overarching waste strategy for Wales where possible by:
• Our buying decisions
• To how we use products and items
• When we choose to discard them
• How we separate our waste for collection and recycling or disposal.
Selecting waste management options which minimise the risk of environmental pollution and harm to health.
Adhering to and applying the waste hierarchy to hazardous waste as a priority, in the prevention and management of our hazardous wastes and seek to work with the contracted party to achieve the application of the hierarchy.

• Other recovery (for example energy recovery)

We seek to comply with the Hazardous Waste Strategy’s 6 principles (Part of Towards Zero Waste in Wales) and are looking for a contractor that will work with the University in endeavouring to opt for hazardous waste management that takes into account the resource value of hazardous wastes, and the need for health and safety to be maintained and delivers the best overall environmental outcome.
The Successful Tenderer(s) shall be required to enter into a contract to provide the relevant Services in accordance with the stated objectives and in accordance with the terms and conditions outlined in the Tender.
The Tender can be split into two Lots (Clinical and Chemical (to include laboratory glass)).
The contract will monitor Clinical and Chemical (including Laboratory glass) waste from collection to final disposal.
